If you are going to be a successful poker player, you have to limit going on tilt. In fact, the ideal situation would be to never go on tilt, ever. This is near impossible for many, but some do a very good job of not going on tilt. First of all you have to realize that it is normal to go on tilt. If you care about the game, and winning–of course you are going to get upset when things do not go away. Even more importantly, if you truly care about your game then you will realize that every time you go on tilt you are only hurting your game. If you really care, you will do something to stop yourself from going on Tilt. Luckily for you, I am here to teach you 4 steps to never going on tilt.
Accept
The first thing you need to do is accept the fact that you will get bad beats. Before every session, sit down and reflect. Think about everything you want to accomplish and see yourself accomplishing your goals. During that same time think about bad beats and get ready to receive them. It is just part of the game and if you expect to get bad beats, they will not hurt as bad. The reason they are so tough to swallow is because when you lose, you are not expecting to. Obviously, it is called a bad beat because you don’t expect to lose the hand. Well–the best way to solve this problem is to realize that you are going to lose hands that you are supposed to win; it is just a simple fact of the game.
Control
We all know that self-control is important for a poker player, but how many of us really have this attribute? It is one of the most important things about being a solid poker player. You must have the self-control to avoid going on tilt. Every step that you are going to take all comes down to this one step right here. Without the self-control, you really cannot accomplish any of the other steps.
Forget
Now, this is the one that can really be hard. Remember, all of these steps work together. It may not be easy to just simply forget what has happened in previous hands, but it may be a lot easier if you first accept and then control. From there, you will be surprised how much easier it is to forget. If you can forget what happened in the last hand, you can focus on the current hand. There is absolutely nothing you can do about the last hand, but you can control what happens in the current hand. Everything will even out and eventually turn in your favor. Just Forget and you will never go on tilt again.
Understand
If you understand how bad beats work, it is a lot easier to get over them. You have heard this before, but seriously; just think about it. For every time you get a bad beat, how many bad beats have you given yourself? For every hand that you should have won, but didn’t; how many hands did you win that you should have lost? Unless you are superman of poker–you probably have no choice but to say to yourself, “hey I guess he is right”. I mean, come on; you are not going to win every hand. The sooner you understand the fact that it all evens out, the better off you will be and the less you will go on tilt. Never going on tilt cannot happen until you understand why you are going on tilt. Once you understand why, if you just think things over you may realize there is not any reason to get all bent out of shape.
Poker is a long-term game. If you play solid poker, you will win over the long run. For every bad beat you get, you will win 10 hands that you should have won. Not only that, but you will probably even give a lot yourself. Not going on tilt ever, does not happen over night. It is a long process and takes years to develop these skills. If you just start taking these 4 steps to never going on tilt than you just might be surprised.
