How to Win at Online Poker

I was playing online poker last night and I thought about the long road I have been down with online poker. I have been through so much play and so many games online and I thought about how long it took me to realize how to truly win at online poker. When I first started playing I wasn’t made of money so I couldn’t afford much (not that I am made of money now). When I began playing online I really didn’t have any money. I would usually deposit about $100 USD and I would get up to about $600-$800. I would always get up to that point no matter what room I playing in. Sure enough, it never took long after until I managed to lose all of that money.

So while I was playing last night I thought that I could make a great post about how to win at online poker. There were a lot of reasons why I was losing when I lost and there were a lot of reasons I was winning before I lost. The number one thing that was holding me back was my lack of discipline. The bad part about online poker is the tremendous amount of temptation. It is just so easy to sit down at any table with any stakes at any time. If I had $800 in my account; I would want to play at a table where the max buy in was $800.

How to Win at Online Poker

Now that I have made mistake after mistake and lost a countless amount of money online, I have managed to put it all together and figure out how to win at online poker. It is not an easy task and it takes a tremendous amount of focus and discipline. Not only that but it takes a lot of desire and passion for poker. Most people will not be able to do what I do; but there are many people that could do what I do, but they don’t.

Bankroll

The first thing you need to play poker online and win is a bankroll. There is no way you can win without a bankroll. If you don’t have a bankroll already then refer to my article called How to Build a Poker Bankroll. You just cannot win without a bankroll; that is the number one thing that was holding me back for so long. I never played with the bankroll that I had and I always wanted to move up stakes which leads to the next point. Not only do you need a bankroll, but you need to follow that bankroll. You should have at least 20 max buy ins as a bankroll. If you don’t have enough to play the limits that you want to play then you are going to need to move down until you build your bankroll up enough to play with.

Game Play

I know how much a lot of you like your sit n goes, but if you are going to follow my guide on how to win at online poker you are going to need to leave them out. While it is very true that you could do great playing sit n goes online; I find it much easier and more profitable to play ring games/cash games. I play 8 cash games at once, and that is how I win at online poker. The more cash games that you can play at the same time the better. You still have to be able to play them all otherwise it is a waste. You cannot just start out playing a bunch of games at once. Just start with one or two and slowly move your way up. Also, the more you play at the same time the higher your bankroll should be.

So far, the objective for you is to get a bankroll, then start playing cash games that match up to your bankroll. I could go on and on with strategies on how to win, but we are going to assume you already know how to actually play poker. What this article will help you with is not how to be better at poker; it will teach you how to take the skills you already have and use them to make a lot more money.

Rules

The number one rule if you want to win at online poker is to never ever go higher then the limits your bankroll can afford. In order for you to play at any specific table you should have at very least 20 times the buy in to that table. If you do not have that much, then you can never allow yourself to play at the table. For a lot of us this is very tempting, but I promise it is the number one way to screw everything up that you are trying to do.

The next rule is to always play the odds. If you play by the odds and probabilities then you are going to do well. You are playing a lot of poker online and you are playing a lot of hands. The numbers are going to add up and you cannot play stupid hands, especially since you will be playing a lot of games at once anyways.

Track everything – there is just no way to get better and learn from your mistakes if you don’t track everything you are doing. If you want win at online poker then you must track what you do. Not to mention the fact that there is no other way to know how much money you are winning or losing.

Keep your ego out of the game – If you are going to win at online poker you cannot bring your ego for the ride. It can be very easy to get pissed off when playing online. There are a ton of dumb asses playing poker online and you can expect to run into a lot of them. We all know what happens when we run into them; they will make us really happy or really mad. You have to be able to forget about bad beats and play smart poker.

If you can manage to keep your head straight and stick to the plan then you will win online and make a lot of money while you are doing it. Learning how to win at online poker can take time and a lot of learning. The tips that I have given you above are very simple tips, no doubt. They are simple and they may seem like no big secret, but I am telling you that if you just do it you will win. These are the mistakes that I had to make and lose a lot of money while making them. I hope that by me sharing them with you, you are going to learn from my mistakes. Learning how to win at online poker is not that hard once you are a good player; it just takes a sound game, a bankroll and some discipline.
