One of the best ways to play poker, especially if you are in it for the fun of the game is with a poker league. There is literally an endless amount of different ways to run a poker league. It really just depends on what you are trying to get out of it and the people that are going to be in your league. Some poker leagues do not even involve any money, while others are all about the money. I have developed my own poker league setup guide which should be a good place to start if you are thinking about starting your own league. Of course, you are going to have to alter it a bit and customize it to your needs, but you should get a good sense of how it works.
The Poker League Setup
Players: 20-50
Buy In: $1,000
Length: 13 weeks
Season: 10 weeks
Playoffs: 2 weeks
Championship: 1 week
Style: Points System
How it Works
Okay, so as you can see above I have filled in the basic information. You could change all of that to your preferences. You will basically have a poker tournament once a week. Each week you will keep track of who wins 1st - 10th place; depending on the amount of players in the league. The more players you have the more places will get rewarded with points.
I will soon describe the point system so hold on for that. Each week the playing field will get awarded points based on their tournament performance. At the end of the regular season the top 40% of the playing field (based on points) will go on to the playoffs which will consist of 4 total tournaments (2 per week). From there you will get it down to a championship which will consist of 6-10 players. The winner of that will win the league championship.
Point System
Each week players will be awarded points which will add up throughout the season.
1st Place: 10 points
2nd Place 6 points
3rd Place 3 points
4th Place 2 points
5th-7th Place 1 point
At the end of the regular season the top three players with the most points should get awarded some of the prize money. Once you take care of them; the rest of the money gets awarded to the top five players in the championship. You can figure out how this works based on the amount of money you have in your prize pool. For my poker league I usually have about a $40,000.00 prize pool so that gives me a lot of room to give some good prize money out.
That is pretty much the basics of how I set up my poker league. This should be a good way to get you started. I am sure that you will find plenty of better ways to do it, but it always helps to have something to base your league off of. Instantly you will think about things you like and don’t like about the way this league is set up. From there you can form your perfect poker league.
