Choosing what type of poker game is best for you can be a very tough task. In fact, there are a lot of guys and girls out there that don’t even give it a chance. Texas Hold’em has become so popular that there are a lot of players that are happy with that game and they never give any others a try. It is easy to stick with what you know and love. What many don’t understand is that they could be missing out on some great opportunities that they shouldn’t be missing out on – especially if you take poker seriously
How do you know what the right type of poker game is for you?
You will never know what the right type of poker game is unless you give them all a try. If the only game you know is Texas Hold’em – then how would you know if you like any of the other poker games? The best way to know is to look into the other games and learn how they are played. All of the games are similar – but they all have a lot of pretty big differences. How do you know (unless you try) what game you are going to like best?
Take me for example:
The first poker game that I really played and go into was (of course) Texas Hold’em – No Limit to be exact. I went on for years playing just strictly No Limit Texas Hold’em without trying any other type of poker game. I was very good at the game and I loved playing it. I began to make a pretty good income playing poker on Full Tilt – but I never really played any other game except for Hold’em.
I started to think about some different games and the possible benefits of playing in different games. I figured that there were probably two different kinds of people that play in any game besides Texas Hold’em (and this is just my theory).
The first kind is the experienced player that specializes in that specific game
The second kind is a beginner who is just trying it out for something different (possibly like you or me back then).
With that in mind, I started thinking about playing in a different type of poker game. I thought that I could possibly make some more money because of the amount of people that would be trying the game without a clue on how to play it. Of course, that was just a thought. It wasn’t until my next theory that I thought about really playing a different type of poker game.
In pretty much any game except for Texas Hold’em – there are just tons of possibilities with pretty much any hand with a different type of poker game. Take Omaha for example; you get four cards and five community cards. Just about any 4 cards can make you think up all kinds of winning hands. As I started to experiment more; I realized that this was exactly how a lot of people think. There are so many people that will play every hand in Omaha – especially hi/lo. It wouldn’t be uncommon to find a whole table filled with players like this.
The fact is that hand selection is extremely important and playing every hand in any poker game is a sure way to lose.
The Point
There are a lot more people that know how to play solid Texas Hold’em then any other game. Just look around the internet and you will see tons of strategies and theories on Texas Hold’em. There are not many about the other games though. That is because Texas Hold’em is the game that is in demand. The question you have to ask yourself…
Where is the money?
One I began playing the different types of poker games I instantly saw the potential. Now, I make twice as much at a good Omaha Hi/Lo table then at a Texas Hold’em table. I do not think it is because I am better at Omaha; I think that there are just a lot more idiots (or at least idiots that are easier to find) at these types of games.
If I wasn’t willing to try out a different type of poker game then I would have never figured this out. I am telling you right now; it is well worth it. You may find that whatever game you play now is the best game for you, but you will never know until you try the other games. Just make sure you understand the basic concepts before you dive in. As long as you have played any other poker game, you shouldn’t have a problem catching on if you know the rules.
