Poker is like a business in a lot of different ways. If you think about the things that go into managing a business it is the same thing with poker. If you are going to take poker seriously and make money from playing poker over a consistent time period, then you must know how to properly manage your poker game as if it were a business.
Managing your Poker Budget
Just like in a business, you have to manage your money. If you do not know how to do that refer to a previous post I wrote called Money Management for a Poker Player. You have to be able to manage your money when you are playing poker. It all comes down to being able to treat your bankroll like it is your budget.
When you own a business you are going to have specific things that you have to spend your budget on such as advertising, payroll and many other things. It is no different with poker. If you are playing poker like a business then you are going to have to obviously make money to live off of right? If that is the case; you are going to need to focus on making enough money to build your bankroll, and pay yourself enough money to live off of at the same time. So you will have to manage that budget so you have enough money to pay yourself.
You can look at your actual game as different expenses that you will have for your poker business. You will obviously have your buy-ins and all of that kind of stuff. Then while you are playing you will have bluffs (costs money), flush draws (costs money) and anything else you might want to risk money on. That is all part of your budget that you must manage properly as the manager and owner of your poker business.
Track Results
One of the problems with poker players is that they do not want to track their results. Just like a business, you have to be able to track your results. You have to know what you have coming in and what you have going out. That is another part of managing your money. You should always know what is coming in and out.
Besides money, you have to always be looking to better your business. Actually, if you think about it that has a lot to do with money as well. You must always be trying to better your business by researching and figuring out what you can get better at. Another thing you could do is subscribe to my RSS in the upper right hand corner and start learning from me.
The fact is that poker is a business. So start tracking, start managing and you will start noticing a big burst in the amount of money you are bringing it. It is amazing what you can improve when you know what needs to be improved in the first place.
